You know, with all the to-do about the pairs figure skating controversy, it actually does look as though the judges were within their rights to award the gold medal to Russia. Since the long program emphasizes artistic impression rather than technical excellence, it's subjective. For example, in diving, someone could do a nine-point dive perfectly and get nine points. A second person could do a ten-point dive and make a mistake and only earn 9.1 points, and still win. Of course, if something's purely subjective, is it really a sport?
